The Texas State Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Celebrating 27th Annual Convention In Dallas

flowersThe Texas State Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. was organized on October 12, 1957 in Dallas, Texas at the home of Rev. and Mrs. E.C. Estell. The first regular meeting was convened at the St. John Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas, April 26, 1958. The Iris Garden served as host.

The Texas State Federation of Garden club is a 501 3 © organization established in response to the need for an organization to promote civic
beautification, conservation and outreach, horticulture and an appreciation of gardening.

We engage in hands on group and individual learning experiences that develop an appreciation for the environment and cultivate the mind. Out slogan is “A garden in every yard, a Plant in every home and and Blossom on every table.” Our mission is “To promote civic beautification through the love of flowers and plants; to cultivate an interest in the study of horticulture and to enjoy the beauty of flowers.

To learn to appreciate the beauty of nature’ to serve as bridges for young people seeking to lean about nature and its resources; to foster good fellowship and to conserve what the master artist created.” Our clubs are located in Dallas, Houston, College Station, Denton and Tyler.

We do summer camps for children ranging in age from 5-14 (both girls and boys) on subjects such as the soil, using clean vegetable cans (part of
our recycling program) demonstrating how to plant seeds, and floral designs, workshop at the Creative Minds After School Program on floral arrangements and correct tools to use. We provide garden therapy to nursing home residents we donate plants, flowers and assistance to the community residents to beautify their yards. We are part of Clean South Dallas initiative, we participate in Harambee Festival during demonstrations on floral design and giving instructions on horticulture, we volunteer at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fait Park Area, we served as host for the African American Museum “Tea at Three” programs. WE established the Ethel Johnson Annual Horticulture Walk for Life.

We established the Frankie Huckaby Scholarship for youth and adults to promote studies in the preservation of nature and science.

We are celebrating out 57th Annual Convention here in Dallas, April 25-26, 2014. Our theme is “Celebrating Our Past… Connecting to the
Future.” Our opening banquet will be April 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel, I-35 and Wintergreen, Desoto, Texas. Debbie Denman, former award winning journalist for WFAA-TV and current director of Communication for the Dallas County Attorney’s office will be out banquet speaker.
