Psalm 46 has served as a tremendous panacea for many saints who have been confronted with and struggle with many problems in this life. Martin Luther considered the psalm as his favorite; moreover, this psalm was the inspiration for Martin Luther’s stirring Reformation hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” There are countless saints who would testify that they have been comforted and aided by reading and trusting in the words of this beloved psalm. In reading this psalm, I pray that your heart will be stirred to trust in the all sufficiency of our God, the One who provides security and peace as we struggle with the troubles of this world.

In Psalm 46:1-3, the psalmist declares that our God is the only source of our security as he states, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (v. 1). Our God supplies us with the necessary security and encouragement we need as we tackle with the various perils of this life. No matter what the degree of danger may be, our God is more than sufficient to aid us in our time of trouble, “Therefore will not we fear” (v. 2a). Our God is always present to aid us in our times of distress; despite the many dangers we face, we can count on God to be right there with us! God has promised us that He will be with us at all times. We are assured of His presence, for Hebrews 13:5b-6 states, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” In verses 4-7, the psalmist further declares that the presence of God secures the city of God, Jerusalem. God’s awesome presence secured Jerusalem; know assuredly that His presence also guards and protects this city, Dallas, Texas, as verse 5 reflects, “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” Those who trust in the sufficiency of our God are always safe against life’s alarms.

It is truly comforting to know that God protects our cities, for Psalm 127:1 states, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” Our Eternal Watchman secures a city, for no nation can withstand His awesome power as reinforced in verse 7, “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” Truly God’s presence secures a city and those who place their confidence in Him will be safe!

Finally, in verses 8-11, as one observes the awesome works of God, one should silently trust in the Lord, and experience His peace, for verse 10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

May God Bless!
