“Women 4 Women”: The Next Generation

My Day by Dr. J. Ester Davis  (esterdavis2000@gmail.com)

Is an ‘old boys network’ still holding women back?  Or do you agree with some that the playing field is level?  On the other side of the coin are women tired of the traditional structures of top-down hierarchy and due to such placing their talents to work for themselves.  Studies still show that men make 48% more than women in some sectors of the gig economy. The big question is have women started creating the kind of environments where they flourish and thrive. The thundering answer is yes.

Black Enterprise Magazine last week boldly tackled the upfront out in the open discussion of the three(3)Black women jurist with the courage and facts to bring down a former President of the United States simply by following the letter-of-the-law.  And of course, that steadfast action comes amidst threats.  Every day and in every way women, especially Black women stand centerstage high- profiled in the news doing monumental things in all areas of business success.  We also see the ‘wave’ in other countries.  Many networks have mentoring programs and actively encourage more experienced women to share details of their career paths.  Research found that senior female managers are equally keen to learn about…and meet…the next generation of women leaders. One of the greatest ways to help others is by sharing your journey and by exposing your vulnerability you are actually putting your experiences out there for others to learn.

Let’s talk about The Fearless Fund,  The Fearless Fund is just one of many platforms openly designed and offered to African-American Women. I mentioned Forbes Magazine in an earlier article and their worldwide initiatives targeting Black women. The Fearless Fund was established in 2019 by several prominent Black women including actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, Arian Simone, and corporate executive Ayana Parsons.  The primary purpose was to empower and support Black women who own small businesses. It is important that I mention the initial investors; to-wit, Costco Wholesale, General Mills, MasterCard, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. The funds provided financial support with awards amounting to as much as $20,000. And to put their money where their mouth is, they have awarded and published to Black women-owned businesses today more than $3 million dollars. There is no doubt…offering grants to Black women business owners fill an important void to achieve economic freedom.  I personally do not use the word ‘small’ business owners because there is nothing ‘small’ about running a business. It is all awe-inspiring!
