Concord Missionary Baptist Church’s Pastor Rev. Bryan Carter and Rev. Eddie L. Jenkins, Pastor of Good Street Baptist Church will serve as the Grand Marshal for The 26th Texas Black Invitational Rodeo on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in Historic Fair Park.
The 26th Texas Black Invitational Rodeo will headline Juneteenth weekend extravaganza. The Rodeo will be the premier Juneteenth event in DFW, featuring a variety of activities for the whole family.
The Rodeo, a more than 25 year institution in Dallas, serves as a unique family entertainment outlet and features over 300 African American cowboys and cowgirls competing for $25,000 in prize money. This fast paced sporting event is also an educationally enlightening experience that provides many of its almost 8,000 viewers with their first glimpse of African American’s historical contribution to the settling of the western United States. “Juneteenth or “Freedom Day” is a very important holiday in the Black community, especially in Texas. On January 1, 1863, slavery was abolished in the United States, but it was not enforced in Texas until June 19, 1865. As a result, this occasion is recognized through various celebrations and parades, and the history of this event serves as one of many ways we shouldn’t forget our past. We want to make the Texas Black Invitational Rodeo our Juneteenth tradition for years to come”, says Khaliq Bryant, Rodeo Event Manager.
The celebration kicks off at the Fair Park Celebrity 5K Walk, Run and Ride on Saturday, June 7 at the African American Museum. One of the highlights of the day will be the Rodeo 101 Camp, where kids (and parents) can learn how real cowboys and cowgirls train for rodeos using mechanical bull riding, calf and steer roping classes and many other hands-on activities.
Juneteenth weekend begins with the Rodeo Hoedown, Friday June 20, 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the African American Museum. There’s food, Zydeco music, dancing and a host of other activities.
Saturday night is the main event, The 26th Texas Black Invitational Rodeo at the Fair Park Coliseum. The Rodeo begins with the Grand Entry Parade at 6:00 p.m., featuring top black motorcycle clubs from across the nation showing off their bikes in a grand display. Rodeo showtime is at 7:00 p.m. sharp and will host a series of spectacular events, including: the pony express relay race, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing and wild bull riding to name a few.
These cowboys and cowgirls will be competing for cash prizes of up to $25,000. Come out and witness a one of a kind, black rodeo.
