Obituary Millie Marie Cavil Ferguson
|Millie Marie Cavil Ferguson was born April 14, 1932 to the parents of Fred D. Cavil and Robbie Nelson Cavil. To that union three children were born: Fred Avery Cavil; and twins, Millie Marie and Willie Morie Cavil.
Millie was a native of San Antonio, Texas. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, graduating Cum Laude from Tillotson College, Austin, Texas (which later became Huston-Tillotson University.) Millie earned a Master of Education Degree from Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas; Vocational Certification, Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas and achieved advanced studies at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Millie retired from the Dallas Independent School District after twenty-eight years of service.
Her life’s work included teaching in the Dallas Independent School District, as well as, assisting her husband, Floyd, in his photography business. They would both attend community and family activities and capture those images as special memories that would last a lifetime. Millie was also an editor at the Dallas Post Tribune newspaper, and wrote and edited articles of importance and special interest to the citizens of Dallas. She was a talented homemaker and an excellent cook. She was generous in sharing sumptuous meals, not only for her family, but for anyone who would come by to visit.
Millie Marie Cavil Ferguson was initiated into Beta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas, January 1953.
As a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Millie served Alpha Xi Omega in leadership positions including the 25th President of Alpha Xi Omega Chapter, First Vice President, Secretary, Sergeant-at-Arms, Hospitality Committee Chair and Publicity Committee Chair. She chaired and served on many committees during her membership in Alpha Xi Omega Chapter. Millie was a candidate for Regional Director in 1977. Her sorority honors include Graduate President Award, and National Reactivation Award presented at New York National Convention. Millie served as Treasure of the South Central Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated from 2000-2004. Millie’s legacy in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated includes her daughter, Stephanie A. Ferguson Hawthorne and granddaughter Tamorah M. Hawthorne, both members of Alpha Xi Omega Chapter.
Millie was a devoted and active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and served with the Alter Society and Parish Council. She was a Life Member of Maria Morgan YWCA and the NAACP. Millie was affiliated with Church Women United, Catholic Daughters of America, Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, St Fidelis Court 102, Black Academy of Arts and Letters, African American Museum, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Dallas Alumni Association of Huston-Tillotson College, Eight Ladies Bridge Club and Thirteen Hearts Bridge Club, where she served as President.
Millie was married to Floyd F. Ferguson, the love of her life, before he preceded her in death. They were the proud parents of one daughter, Stephanie Anne Ferguson Hawthorne; three sons, Stephen Anthony Ferguson, Michael Floyd, and Patrick Fitzgerald Ferguson and six grandchildren, Tamorah, Stephanie (deceased), Brian, Evan, Raven and Stephen II Brittaney. She was beloved by her Sorority members, church members and countless individuals from the community. Her love also extended to many others who affectionately called her Aunt Millie and Mamma Mille.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Millie Ferguson Memorial Scholarship.
