Big things happen in Big D; but it was in Charlotte, NC, that Dallas businesswoman, Danette Anthony Reed, joined an international platform.

Ms. Reed was installed as the International Treasurer during the biennial international convention of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated last week. Among two other very qualified candidates, Ms. Reed emerged as the winner and will serve through 2016 under newly installed International President, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Ms. Danette Anthony Reed is a 38-year member of the service-centered sorority and is a charter member of the Omicron Mu Omega ( ) chapter in Dallas. “We congratulate our member, Danette Anthony Reed, as she joins several DFW sorority members who are serving on international committees,” states Ms. Cynthia Robinson- Hawkins, President of the Dallas chapter. “But we are exceptionally proud as she makes chapter history by being the first from to serve on the International Directorate.” Mrs. Chelle Luper Wilson, a member of the Carrollton chapter, is the sorority’s South Central Regional Director and is the only other person from the Metroplex currently serving on the 18-member Directorate.

Ms. Reed’s academic, professional and sorority credentials made it easy for all to agree with her campaign slogan, “Reed is Right.” She earned a  Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at Northwestern University and holds an MBA, specializing in Finance, from SMU. She has been a corporate executive for PepsiCo, Frito Lay Division for over 31 years. She was the first African-American woman to be a plant director for Frito Lay, Inc. She spearheaded the start up of a multi-million dollar bakery facility in South Dallas, creating 300 jobs in the southern sector. In April of this year she was recognized by Indra Nooyi, CEO for PepsiCo, with a 2014 Chairman’s award for outstanding leadership.

When she is not working, she is serving the community – not only as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – but also as the Girl Scout Leader for Troop #1708. She is a charter member of the Greater Denton County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of North Texas, with Bishop Lynch School’s Brigade team, and North Texas Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

In this international role, her goal is to safeguard the assets of the sorority, ensuring the financial viability of the organization. She will also complete and submit all budgets and financial performance reports. But, true to her serving nature, she will also provide training and support to chapter and regional leaders to help develop the next generation.

“This is the right time for me, and I’m ready,” Ms. Reed stated when she announced her candidacy in February. She has said and maintains that she will lead with integrity and transparency. Her record over the last three decades indicates she will do just that.
