Quitting isn’t easy but it’s possible.

Having a plan can make quitting smoking easier. Making a quit plan helps you stay focused, confident and motivated.

Are you ready to quit? Use this plan to help you do it.

Stay Busy

Keeping busy is a great way to refrain from smoking. Being busy will help you keep your mind off smoking and distract you from cravings. Try some of these activities when you need to occupy yourself:

  • Take a walk outside.
  • Chew gum or eat mints.
  • Keep your hands busy with a pen or toothpick.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Use deep breathing techniques.
  • Start a hobby.
  • Spend time with non-smoking friends and family.

Avoid Triggers

Triggers are the people, places, things, and situations that may make you want to smoke. Try to avoid all your triggers. Here are some common smoking triggers that you should avoid when possible:

  • Throw away your cigarettes, lighters, and ash trays. Even seeing these things could increase the urge to smoke.
  • Try reaching for a cup of tea next time you need a caffeine boost. Caffeine can make you feel jittery and cause you to want to smoke.
  • Go to places where smoking isn’t allowed.
  • Did you know that being tired can trigger you to smoke? Make sure you get plenty of rest.
