Peggy Ann MitchellPeggy Ann Mitchell was born in Detroit, MI on June 10, 1931 to the union of John and Harriett McRuffin.

Peggy attended St. Peter’s Academy in Dallas, TX. She continued her education by attending the University of Nebraska, where she was the first African-American female to integrate the freshman dormitory.

On August 17, 1950, she married Ballard Gordon (B. G.) Mitchell and to this union one son and four daughters were born.

Peggy was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she served on the Eucharist Ministry, the Finance Committee, the Food Pantry, and the Altar Society, Peggy worked for many years as an Administrative Assistant for various companies, such as Texas Instruments and Sun Oil Co. She worked for Constable Jesse Dawson for twelve years and then Constable Burl Jernigan until her retirement in 1994. After retirement, Peggy worked part time for John23rdCatholicSchool and North ParkC.M.E.Church.

Peggy was predeceased by her father, John Bestus McRuffin; mother, Harriett, and husband, Ballard Mitchell.

Peggy believed in making a difference where the Lord placed her. She would often call the City of Dallas when something needed to be fixed on her street or take up collections for neighbor, or take neighbors, friends, and even strangers to the grocery store when needed. Peggy enjoyed traveling and would often travel with the Booker T. Washington- Lincoln Alumni Association, where at one time, she served as the Corresponding Secretary. She was a true Dallas sports fan and faithful watcher of the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers. She was also an avid bid whist card player.

Peggy leaves to cherish her memories: One sister-in-law, Ethel R. McDonald; one son, Bernard Mitchell (Carolyn); four daughters, Sandra Brown (Ronald), Dianne Hooks (Johnny), Donna White, Harriett Mitchell, and 12 grandchildren: DeAngela, Leta, Gregory, Traci, Patrice, TaMara, Ronald, Jr., Jordan, Darah, Evelyn, Adam, and John Marcus; 14 great grandchildren, and a host of family and wonderful friends.
