Cowboys Return to Mesquite

Hip Hop Cowboys rides back into Mesquite with another first — the country’s first rodeo to combine gospel and hip hop music with the extreme sport of rodeo. Heaven & Hooves: Hip Hop Cowboys’ Third Annual Spring Rodeo will be hosted by David Mann — best known as “Mr. Brown” from Tyler Perry’s movies, and will also include a special appearance by Tamela Mann, who took home the big prizes at this year’s Stellar Gospel Music Awards in January, where she was named “Artist of the Year” and received seven awards, including one for best female vocalist. This not-to-miss, family-friendly show is at Mesquite Arena on Saturday, March 15th.

“Hip Hop Cowboys: Heaven & Hooves is doing what we do best — bringing something different to the sport of rodeo and combining it with gospel, hip hop, R&B, soul, zydeco, blues and more in a way that breaks stereotypes,” said Damon Leffall, CEO and founder of Hip Hop Cowboys. “This is a family-friendly show with a lot of music. This is an opportunity to open a lot of people’s eyes to the sport of rodeo and entertain them with personalities, performers and athletes they can’t see anywhere else.”

Kid-friendly entertainment will include a calf scramble for a cash prize that children at the event can participate in for free. Also, an exhibition of the best local “kid cowboys” will include mutton bustin’, calf riding and junior bull riders.

Hip Hop Cowboys is always redefining the rodeo experience with the many different flavors of music that bring people together — from hip hop and R&B to gospel, zydeco, blues and more. Headlining the event is David Mann, otherwise known as “Mr. Brown,” who will entertain the audience with his comedic personality and antics. Also making a guest appearance is Tamela Mann, an actress and gospel singer, known for her role as Cora in Tyler Perry’s movies. DJ Dollar (aka John Johnson) — a team roper and southern gentleman with a big spirit — will spin gospel, blues, and zydeco and more in his live performance right after his team-roping debut at Hip Hop Cowboys! Also, be sure not to miss the rapping bull rider, Craig Jackson, who will compete for the big prize in bull riding.

Tickets are on sale now for the event, which will be held at Mesquite Arena at 1818 Rodeo Drive in Mesquite on Saturday, March 15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. with a grand entry rodeo parade. The rodeo action begins immediately, featuring exciting events such as bull riding, team roping, bareback riding, steer wrestling and lady’s barrel racing. Hip Hop Cowboys will also include relay racing, a fast paced rodeo event that thrills the crowd with its non-stop action of riders on horseback racing each other around the arena in relay style. Hip Hop Cowboys is an open rodeo that will feature the top 10 best competitors in each event.

Ticket prices for Hip Hop Cowboys start at $20 for adults and $10 for children ages three to 12. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, the Mesquite Arena box office, or online at www.mesquiterode.com, and at the door.
