Hankins, other Redskins targets to visit other teams

(AP) – The Washington Redskins aren’t the only team interested in Johnathan Hankins.

The free agent defensive tackle will visit the Detroit Lions, ESPN is reporting. Hankins visited the Redskins on Monday, but left Ashburn without a deal.

Hankins, 25, would be a significant haul for the Redskins, who are looking to upgrade their defensive line. He was released last week by the Indianapolis Colts, after just one season since signing a three-year, $27 million deal in 2017. The Colts are switching defensive schemes and didn’t view Hankins as a fit.

The Lions are in need of a defensive tackle, too. They are also bringing in former first-rounder Sylvester Williams, who visited the Redskins on Tuesday. Williams, 29, was recently cut by the Tennessee Titans.

The Redskins, according to ESPN, have also made an offer to outside linebacker Pernell McPhee, but McPhee is visiting the Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins appear fine with playing the waiting game. Earlier in the month, Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams said Washington wouldn’t spend money just to spend it.

Washington has added wide receiver Paul Richardson, cornerback Orlando Scandrick and punter Sam Irwin-Hill since free agency began. They’ve also re-signed linebacker Zach Brown, kicker Dustin Hopkins and wideout Brian Quick in the last week. The Alex Smith trade became official, as well.

The Redskins, according to the website Over the Cap, have $21 million in cap space remaining.
