WHAT: An idea of their own making, students from St. Philip’s School & Community Center and The Episcopal School of Dallas will go to Dallas City Hall this Thursday and ask Mayor Mike Rawlings to proclaim November as “Math Rocks Month.” The students will read letters from their schoolmates and then plead their case to explain that math is cool and fun and can lead to exciting careers. The students want to change the perception of math and help families and children understand that math provides a crucial foundation of knowledge that can lead to thrilling careers in everything from sports and space, movie-making and medicine, to innovation and illustration.

WHY: After learning that ESD and St. Philip’s School & Community Center are sponsors of the bilingual 2theXtreme: MathAlive! traveling exhibition at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the students came up with the idea to declare November as “Math Rocks Month.” They’re also recruiting students across Dallas to join them in writing letters to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings asking him to make the declaration.

The youngsters are very excited about their involvement with the “to-the-extreme” exhibition that explores the endless possibilities of real-world math through applications like video games, sports, fashion, music, robotics and more. The 2theXtreme: MathAlive! exhibition at the Perot Museum runs Sept. 27, 2014, through Jan. 4, 2015.

If Mayor Rawlings agrees to proclaim November as “Math Rocks Month,” the students hope to return to a Dallas City Council meeting or briefing to receive the proclamation.
