COVID-19 Vaccine Questions? Ask Local Black Physicians at “Shop Talks”

“Want to hear from local black physicians about the COVID-19 vaccine? Tune in for ‘Shop Talks'”

(Dallas, TX, February 2021). Over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Approximately one year later, still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the recent development and rollout of COVID vaccines has brought hope to many, but has brought concerns about vaccine safety, side effects, and more to others.

One group of local doctors is concerned about how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting the black community, with higher case rates and death rates in black people compared to other races. They see vaccination as a big part of the solution for this disparity. Yet they also understand the fears and concerns associated with the vaccine, especially given the mistrust among many black community members who remember their history of mistreatment by the medical community through the likes of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and much more. “Many people are hesitant because they are wary of what has happened in the past. Rightfully so.”, says David Osula, one of the physicians involved. “Others are also worried about safety, side effects, what’s in the vaccine, and more. We want to help answer those questions for people.”

Despite the horrors of the past, this group of black physicians wants to build trust through open dialogue with the community about the COVID-19 pandemic and, specifically, the COVID-19 vaccines.
