Congresswoman Johnson Announces University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Receives Grant Funding

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced that the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center will receive $684,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services as part of the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program.

“This federal funding to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center will allow the school to provide scholarships to disadvantaged students as our country recognizes the importance of diversity in our health care workforce,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “It is critically important, and even lifesaving, for our health professionals to be reflective of the communities they serve. Increasing diversity and cultural competency will improve our mission to provide Americans across our nation with accessible and quality healthcare.”

The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program provides scholarships to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are enrolled in health professions and nursing programs. The program makes funds available to schools of medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, pediatric medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, public health, chiropractic, allied health, graduate programs in behavioral and mental health practice, and programs providing training of physician assistants.
