DALLAS — Dallas City Council Members Carolyn King Arnold, Casey Thomas and other local officials joined residents Tuesday to celebrate the first home and homeowner in the grassroots Community First Homebuyers Initiative.

The initiative aims to expand access to single family home ownership in District 4 and throughout Dallas by utilizing low-cost land, acquired through the City of Dallas’ Land Bank Program, to build and sell affordable homes to prospective homebuyers in targeted ZIP codes.

“This development is the quintessential story of the southern sector’s rebirth. Years of hard work, not only in Cedar Crest but throughout the City, made the day possible,” said Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization Director, David Noguera. “We’ve had many people at the City working diligently to identify and assemble vacant lots in various neighborhoods with the objective of returning that land to productive use. With this development, we are excited about offering the opportunity for more people to call Dallas home.”

Chase bank, along with Community First Homebuyers Initiative, Builder Black Island, LLC and the homebuyer, Breanna Thomas, worked in coordination on this first home.

“Dallas is an expensive place to live” Thomas said. “If it wasn’t for Chase bank helping me get a mortgage, the City of Dallas down payment assistance program and Black Island building such a beautiful home, I’m not sure how I would have been able to move in today. It will make a difference to my kids, their kids and their kids. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Chase bank as well as Community First & Black Island Co LLC will continue to maximize opportunities and resources to make homeownership with high-quality homes, a true reality for families.

“Our goal is to build great, affordable homes, spur further economic development, and create a neighborhood, benefiting the local community for generations to come,” Black Island Managing Partner Anthony Davis said.
