Eric D. Campbell has been appointed Assistant Dallas City Manager starting September 29.

According to officials he will oversee the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire-Rescue, Courts and Detention Services, and the Office of Emergency Management.

Eric Campbell is a 26 year veteran of the public service profession, serving as a Deputy/Assistant City Manager for the last 13 years, most recently with the City of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Campbell joined the City of Charlotte in April, 2008, where he serves as one of three Assistant City Managers. During his tenure, he has provided administrative oversight for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police; Charlotte Fire Department; Shared Services (Procurement, Technology Management, and Fleet); Corporate Communications; Engineering and Property Management; Charlotte- Mecklenburg Utilities; Storm Water Services; and the Community Relations Committee.

In addition to his administrative oversight of departments, Campbell serves as the staff resource for the City Council’s Community Safety Committee as well as chairman of the City Manager appointed Shared Services Governance Committee and the Executive Management Risk/Loss Task Force. Lastly, he is Co- Chair of an interdepartmental/ interagency committee known as the Community Cabinet.

He began his public service career in 1987 with the Office of Management and Budget, Arlington County, Virginia. He subsequently served as a budget analyst with the Commonwealth’s Department of Planning and Budget, Richmond, Virginia. He next served in the role of intergovernmental relations administrator with the City of Newport News, Virginia, later becoming a budget management analyst with Prince George’s County, Maryland, followed by director of business management, the Crater Youth Care Commission, Disputanta, Virginia, and finally deputy city manager, City of Portsmouth, Virginia. He comes to Charlotte from the City of Petersburg, Virginia, where he served as Assistant City Manager.

He received his master’s degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Hampton University. He holds an advanced certificate in Public Policy Analysis from Old Dominion University and is a graduate of the Senior Executive Institute – Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

Campbell has also completed a number of International City/County Management Association (ICMA) University workshops. In 2001, he received ICMA’s Workplace Diversity Scholarship. Campbell is a member of ICMA and the Virginia Local Government Management Association. He served on the board of the Richmond Community Action Program and the Willcox Watershed Conservancy.
