A MESSAGE FROM MRS. GLORIA ASHFORD, THE MOTHER OF SENATOR ROYCE WEST

Dear Voters:

Forgive me for being a little proud of my son today. Sunday was Father’s Day, so it gave me some time to think about what a great dad he has been to his children, and also about what he has accomplished in his life, and for others.

I watched Royce grow up. I watched him integrate his high school and be a strong leader on his football team. I looked on as he went to college and law school, and I was so proud when he achieved his dream and became a State Senator. I found this photo of me, his father Willis, and Royce on the day Royce was sworn in as President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate. What a wonderful day that was.

Every mother wants her son to succeed. As we so painfully recognize, not every mother has that chance. What has made me so proud of Royce is that he understands that his duty as a leader is to care for others, to keep them safe, to help them learn, and to help them find their way in life.

He’s done that with legislation. He’s done that with mentoring programs. He’s done that by bringing a public college
and a public law school to his district.

Now, as the country faces a deep reckoning on race relations, institutional racism, and finding a way to make America a more perfect union, I know my son was made for this moment. He has the experience and
record. He has shown the commitment we need.

My son, Senator Royce West, can do so much more for every Texan in Washington as your U.S. Senator. I know it. I’ve watched him do it his whole life.

Early voting begins next Monday, June 29, and continues through July 10. Please make a voting plan and go vote.

Please tell your family and friends to go vote. This year, this time, we must be heard.
