Diversity Week DCN Web BannerThe City of Dallas WIC Program and the North Texas Food Bank recently joined forces to host the program, Cooking Matters at the Store for WIC Parents.

Cooking Matters is an education initiative of the Sharing Our Strength/No Child Hungry collaborative, coordinated by the North Texas Food Bank. The program teaches basic nutrition and food shopping in a hands-on environment while focusing on how to choose WIC foods.

WIC clinics recruit parents interested in improving their shopping skills, while WIC nutritionists and dietitians facilitate in-store tours. The Food Bank provides materials including a facilitator guide with talking points, recipes, handouts, reusable shopping bags and $10 gift cards for the shopping challenge. The 60 to 90 minute tours are taught in English and Spanish at stores near WIC Clinics, including Kroger, Fiesta and Save-a-lot.

Response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive and there are plans to expand the tours to all 19 WIC clinics.
