A host of community members joined Dallas ISD officials, staff and students at Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School March 21 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the school’s new $7.5 million 18- classroom addition.

Speakers included Dallas ISD District 6 Trustee Carla Ranger, State Representative Toni Rose, Chief of School Leadership Sylvia Reyna, and Division 4 Executive Director Usamah Muhammad-Rodgers. Several family members of the late Thomas L. Marsalis attended and were presented a framed memento of the occasion by Principal Kimberly Richardson who served as emcee of the event.

South Oak Cliff High School’s JROTC opened the celebration with the presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance. Student performances included the Marsalis Elementary school choir and first-grader Tinashe McGowan who played piano.

The $7.5 million expansion at the Oak Cliff school were funded by the district’s 2008 bond program and included 18 new classrooms and a redesigned school entrance. The project’s construction team included project manager, Jacobs, general contractor, Ratcliff Constructors, and architect, Manning Associates.
