The Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest Prepares for Top Amateur Golfers
The Southwest Airlines® Showcase at Cedar Crest inaugural golf tournament is set to take place from Nov. 13 through Nov. 15 at the historic Cedar Crest Golf Course, located at 1800 Southerland Ave, Dallas, Texas 75216. The event will be nationally televised on the GOLF Channel, highlighting a diverse group of top amateur golfers.
The tournament will feature 42 players, including 21 men and 21 women from over 33 colleges and universities across 21 states. Notably, four participants are nationally ranked high school golfers, including 15-year-old Shyla Brown, a high school sophomore from McKinney, Texas, who currently holds the 79th position in the Rolex AJGA rankings. Chuck Walker, the I Am a Golfer Foundation’s executive director and the lead tournament ambassador, expressed excitement about the strong player field, saying, “The player field is shaping up to be even stronger than we originally hoped for. With so many top players having committed to play, the competition for the men’s and women’s crowns should be intense and fun to watch.”
The Cedar Crest Golf Course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, has a celebrated history of challenging the best golfers. It was chartered in 1919 and has hosted significant national tournaments, including the 1927 PGA Championship won by Walter Hagen and the 1954 UGA Negro National Open won by Dr. Charlie Sifford, all of whom are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This tournament provides a unique opportunity to showcase diverse student athletes on a national stage within the southern Dallas community.
Dave Ridley, co-founder and chairman of the I AM a Golfer Foundation, emphasized the historic significance of Cedar Crest, stating, “Many of these players will become trailblazers themselves both on and off the golf course later in life. We view this event as a springboard for them.”
The Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest is open to the public free of charge with available public parking. Spectators can also enjoy tournament merchandise, food, and beverages, and there will be music in Legends Plaza for all to enjoy.
