DeSoto ISD launched a summer reading challenge called 5-20-5 encouraging students to read five days a week for 20 minutes a day and discuss five book topics with peers and adults reading along. Throughout the summer, Superintendent Dr. David Harris has presented engaged readers with gift cards for their efforts.

What is the 5-20-5 Summer Reading Challenge?
Parents, grandparents, older siblings, mentors and other adults are encouraged to sit down and turn off all electronics and read with their children for at least 5 days per week for 20 minutes a day and share 5 things they learned or found interesting while reading a book.

What is the purpose of the 5-20-5 Summer Reading Challenge?

We are challenging students to read and engage in conversations about books! We are also encouraging family participation for modeling behavior. Parent and teacher modeling behavior is the second most influential factor in promoting a love of reading in children.
