MY DAY: 56 Years of Marriage
|By Dr. Ester Davis
A plethora of new innovations were introduced to Americans in and near the year 1957. Louis Armstrong cancelled his government sponsored trip to Russia because he was furious over development in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Hula Hoop became an instant success . Givenchy showcased his collection of pointed toes heels in Paris. The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was introduced with a mini bar as a standard feature. And Edwin Cash asked Maxine Turner for her hand in marriage.
Maxine and Edwin Cash will celebrate 56 years of marriage this month. I talked to the two of them recently in their comfortable North Dallas home, surrounded by so many precious memories, loads of laughter and of course, a sweet potato pie. Maxine’s lifesize picture that hung in The Women’s Museum before it closed now resides prominently in the living room. Their only child, Sherry Lynn, a Dallas attorney, made her usual evening call while I was there, just to check on the ‘lovebirds’.
Born in Hughes Springs, Texas, Miss Maxine Turner graduated from Prairie View A&M University and received her Masters at Southern Methodist University. Mr. Edwin Cash, born and raised in South Dallas attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, Lincoln High School, graduating from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. Returning home, he attended North Texas University in Denton, Texas. Serving his country in U.S. Air Force, he later came home as a handsome single man.
The girls were “a-hubbering” and a calling. But the one that won his heart was the ever polite Miss Turner. Mr. Cash vividly recalls that his Mother would answer the phone, and the ‘divine Miss Turner’ would proceed with greetings to his Mother and even ask about Mr. Cash, Edwin’s father. Good manners win every time. They were married September 28, 1957 at Good Street Baptist Church, on Good Street, with the young dynamic Rev. Caesar Clark officiating.
Look for part two of this story about Grand Master Edwin Bernard Cash (1990 – 1994) Prince Hall Masonic Lodge and his distinguished history making career as leader of the jurisdiction of Texas.
He is recognized as the oldest living past Grand Master in the region. You two are just great!!! Many more years ahead.
