National Volunteer Appreciation Month, observed during the month of April, commemorates the shining contribution of those who make our schools better by volunteering.

Umphrey Lee Elementary School recognizes Atkinson Toyota, formerly Orr Toyota, and its community outreach coordinator Al Moten, for supporting the school’s intramural basketball league under the condition that student participants maintain at least a C average.

Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary thanks Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for their reading comprehension tutoring efforts.

“The overall impact of having volunteers to support our struggling readers has been motivating for students, faculty, and parents, said Marsalis teacher Kebra Record. “As teachers and parents begin to see the change in their students, many requests were made to increase the number of students being serviced by the Reading Partners. The volunteers add an extra level of accountability for student achievement, and students wanted their volunteers to know how well they had done, or how much they had grown.”

T.G. Terry Elementary School has a host of volunteers like Roy L. Burrell, Mary E. Kendricks-Perkins, Marysol Flores, Audrey King, and Marian J. Joiner who work to ensure students have a top-tier educational experience by supporting campus faculty and staff throughout the school year.

Whether volunteers come to serve as parents of students, retired educators, vested community members or simply individuals who want to make a difference, the Dallas ISD and District 6 appreciates the efforts of the countless, selfless volunteers who support teachers and education for our students.

Kiera Robinson Day

In commemoration of the recent loss of John Leslie Patton Jr. Academic Center student Keira Robinson, the school chose to honor Robinson by accepting the challenge of committing to 100 percent attendance because it was important for her to make sure she attended school every day despite her struggles with asthma.

Shaundra Staton-Dillon, Patton’s community liaison, called Robinson “one of the sweetest scholars at our campus.”
