Leader of The Week Mayaria Johnson
|Mayaria Johnson, a student from Cedar Hill, Texas, is earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Amidst her time at the University of North Texas – Denton, Mayaria has received numerous honors, awards and scholarships including the AT&T Foundation Scholarship, the UNT College of Engineering Scholarship, Multicultural Scholastic Award and the Women Breaking Barriers Eagle Award. Likewise, she has been on the Dean’s or President’s list throughout her undergraduate academic studies at UNT.
Mayaria has served in leadership roles as well. She is actively involved with the UNT Society of Women Engineers, serving as Webmaster in the 2012-2013 academic year, and President during the 2013-2015 academic years. Mayaria has been graciously supported throughout the 2014-2015 academic year by a fantastic executive board (Vice-President: Sandra Ruiz, Secretary: Hollie King, Treasurer: Jordan Luper, Historian: Sarah Smith, Webmaster: Haley Barnes, Event Coordinator: Bria Miles, Public Relations Chair: Jessica Hampton), counselor (Carol Bachman) and faculty advisor (Dr. Nandika D’Souza). Additionally, Mayaria served as Treasurer for the Council of Engineering Organizations in 2013-2014, and is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Mayaria has shared her quest for student success by serving as a volunteer tutor for the Exceptional Engineers (E2) program in Computer Science, General Chemistry for Science Majors, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Calculus (1 & 2) from 2012-2014. Through this tutoring program, Mayaria received the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certificate, and is recognized as a Level 1 Certified Tutor. In addition to honors, awards, scholarships, involvement in student organizations, and the volunteer tutoring program,
Mayaria was selected and given the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research in software testing and computer science education with Dr. Renee Bryce, Associate Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at UNT.
Mayaria participated in a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program during the summer of 2013, and a CREU (Collaborative Research Experience for Undergraduates) program during the 2013-2014 academic years. In the fall of 2014, Mayaria was the first student admitted into the Computer Science and Engineering Grad Track program where she is currently seeking a Master of Science in Computer Science.
Lastly, in the summer of 2014, Mayaria was selected as a Business + Information Solutions (BIS) intern with PepsiCo in Plano, Texas. Upon completion of that internship, Mayaria was offered a position as a BIS Assistant Analyst with PepsiCo. Mayaria graciously accepted this offer and will begin her career in June 2015.
