A jury last Friday recommended 12 years in the Texas State prison for a Dallas County woman, Alexia Lavon Bowman, one day after she was convicted of fatally shooting the owner barbershop in South Dallas for 15 years.

Bowman, 40, was found guilty on Thursday of murdering Fred Myers, who was  42 at the time of death. Myers was found shot multiple times, on the morning of  Aug. 10, 2019, at the Kingz of Cutz barbershop in the 3100 block of Al Lipscomb Way.  He was taken to a hospital and died a few moments later. Myers was well-known in the community and was always helping people.

During an emotional sentencing hearing, the jury heard from both family members.  “She shot him in cold blood and all she got was manslaughter,” the victim’s family members kept repeating in the hallway. The defense asked for probation and monitoring for the mother of three.

Bowman testified in her defense that she and the victim had an open sexual relationship but that she loved him.  The eyewitnesses, including a defense attorney, said that an argument over money preceded the shooting.  Bowman, the witnesses testified, said that she told Meyers that he needed to pay her, or she was “about to act a fool in here.”  She knocked over some snacks that Meyers sold to his customers.  Meyer, then according to Bowman and the witnesses, began to choke her by her throat and slammed her up against the wall.

She finally left but then returned 15 minutes later and opened the front door and told Meyers to come outside. He tried to close the door instead, but Bowman pulled a small pistol from her bosom and shot him several times.  The whole scene was captured on a video security camera and was played before the jury.

Betty Myers-Davis, Fredrick’s mother, told this reporter that “This barbershop meant everything to my son.  I knew he would want to keep the store open,” the mother said.  I have owned and managed it ever since his death. Fred was his mother’s only child.

Jay Vee Burberry, Myer’s cousin, told reporters at the time of the murder that Myers was trying to protect the people in his shop and “saved their lives by giving up his.”

From Where I Sit

It is a while since I last sit in on a high-profile trial that being in a federal bribery charge lodged against  Americasouth  CEO Ruel Hamilton. The prosecutor was seeking a 25-year sentence, the Judge gave him 8 years.   Hamilton was represented by a  high-power defense attorney named Abbe Lowell. Lowell represented President Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial. Recently, Lowell sent out a  Defamation Cease and Desist letter to former President Donald Trump on behalf of Hunter Biden, son of the 46th President.

Entering the Dallas County Courtroom, the first person I saw was former Commissioner, now Judge JJ Koch. Appointed by Governor Abbot, Koch replaces a white woman Judge Kennedy who left for the Court of appeals bench.

Both victims are black.  The Defendant, who fatally shoot her boyfriend at the South Dallas Barbershop that he owned.  Alexis Lavon Bowman, 40, court records show, posted a $500,000 bond and chose to have her fate decided by a jury of twelve instead of by a Judge.  The victim was.   Myers’s mother, Betty Myers-Davis, that Bowman had formerly worked at the barbershop and had come in to ask for money. Mayers  asked her to leave, but she returned with a gun and shot Myers “in cold blood.”

The front two rows were seated by the interns of the prosecutor and public defender’s office, nervous as the family,  each sat patiently. I sat in the first row behind the Defense to get a good look at the juror.

The Court adjourned for a break. and when I returned The Defense attorney was talking and standing to the jurors.  Tall and slender, The lawyers said that Alexis

Myers-Davis said

“This barbershop meant everything to him,” his mother said. “It meant he helped people with jobs, and he would want to keep it open and so we’re gonna try to do that.  “Bowman has been convicted of several misdemeanors in Dallas County, including unlawful carrying of a weapon.

I sat there as the smooth black Defense Attorney Scottie Allen

Fredrick Myers, 42, who was the owner of the barbershop, was found shot on August 10th at approximately 11:30 that morning at the Kingz of Cutz barbershop, which is located in the 3100 block of Al Lipscomb Way. He was rushed to a hospital and died a few moments later.
Bowman got into an argument with Myers over money. Bowman told Myers that he needed to pay her, or she was “about to act a fool in here,” then knocked over some snacks from the back of the shop. She left the shop after the argument, but then returned a couple moments later, opened the door, and told him to come outside. He tried to close the door instead, but she pulled a small handgun from her shirt and shot him several times before escaping the situation.

Bowman used to work at the barbershop, according to Fredrick was trying to protect the customers and his employees in the shop and “save their lives by giving up his,” according to Jay Vee Burberry, Fredrick’s cousin.

Fredrick Myers was well-known in the community and was always helping people around him, according to his family. “it meant he helped people with jobs, and he would want to keep it open and so we’re trying to do that.”

Alexis Bowman has been convicted of several crime scenes in Dallas County, including carrying a weapon unlawfully.

Myers owned Kingz of Cutz for almost 15 years.

Those close to Myers said during a vigil outside the barbershop the day after his murder, they remember his loving, giving heart.

They said he cared about South Dallas.

Myers gave people in need jobs and helped the homeless.
