Dallas ISD excited, ready for students’ return to the classroom for 2015-16

Welcome back, Dallas ISD. The 2015-2016 school year kicks off Monday, August 24, and as always, it is an exciting time filled with anticipation and opportunity. As with any new journey, the start of the school year offers a chance to renew our goals with great vigor and purpose fresh from the rest and relaxation of the summer.

We have much work ahead, and I challenge each of us to make this the year we turn up the volume on our efforts to help students achieve academic success. Whether you’re a parent or guardian, teacher or district staff, community partner or volunteer, each of us has something to give to this most important cause.

I am honored to serve the great people of District 6 and invite each of you to join me as we move students to greater heights. Let’s make this a journey we all share and commit to living a life bigger than ourselves by making a difference in students’ lives.

Other back to school news across the district:

I would like to thank all who attended the community meeting held July 30 at Southwest Center Mall. The conversations had at the event are crucial to our continued growth and improvement in Dallas ISD and I encourage parents, community and district supporters to continue to look for and attend future events and get involved in helping move Dallas ISD forward.

Part of the forward movement is the opening of one of Dallas ISD’s new schools of choice–D.A. Hulcy STEAM Academy which focuses its curriculum on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. In its inaugural school year, Hulcy STEAM will open under the leadership of Jonica Crowder-Lockwood. The school will host sixth grade this year with plans to extend course and curriculum offerings to seventh and eighth graders in the next two years.

As we kickoff the upcoming school year, District 6 welcomes newly appointed principals at the following campuses for the 2015-2016 school year …

  • Letrice Portley, Barbara Manns Education Center
  • Tammie Brooks, Maria Morena Elementary School
  • Ariss Rider, Ronald McNair Elementary School
  • Roshonda Clayton-Brown, Umphrey Lee Elementary School
  • Valarie Kendrick, Birdie Alexander Elementary School

Parents of new and returning students in Dallas ISD can now enroll their students online at www.dallasisd.org/onlineenrollment. Once online enrollment forms are completed, parents and guardians of Dallas ISD students are still required to deliver enrollment documents such as proof of residency or immunization records to the student’s campus of choice in person.

The law requires students enrolling for the first time must provide official records of required and up-to-date immunizations prior to the start of classes.

Parents of students in schools such as a Dallas ISD Magnet School, School of Choice or other special enrollment school, must enroll your children in person at their campus

Visit www.dallasisd.org/onlineenrollment or call (972) 925-5860 for more information.

The district Back-to-School Hotline will be available to parents who have questions during the first week of school. The number to call is (972) 925-5437. If you have questions before then, the Dallas ISD Constituents Line is available at (972) 925-5555.

Additionally, the district’s website has plenty of back to school information to help get your student started on the right track. The district calendar is also available online. Please make note of fall parent conference dates (October 13-15) and Spring Break dates (March 14-18). For more information, visit the back to school page at www.dallasisd.org.

District 6, let’s have a great school year.
