DART HONORING ROSA PARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY “ACT OF COURAGE” ON NOV. 30
|News media representatives are invited to join U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson and officials from the city of Dallas and DART as they note the 60th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ decision to keep her seat on a Montgomery, Ala. city bus marking the start of the civil rights movement in the second half of the last century.
The celebration will include musical performances from students at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School and the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy of the Dallas ISD. Remarks will be made by Rep. Johnson, Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson, DART Board Chair Faye Wilkins and DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas. The speakers and students will unveil two new plaques recognizing Parks’ efforts and her role in public transportation. Invited guests include members of the DART Board of Directors and representatives from DART’s 13 service area cities.

Parks’ action on December 1, 1955 prompted the start of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which would conclude one year later with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning segregation on public transportation.
