Dallas Back to school FairWHAT:                 This summer marks a milestone as the Mayor’s Back To School Fair celebrates its 20th year. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will be at Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School on Thursday (June 23) at 10:30 a.m. to kick off the first pre-registration drive and unveil key details regarding the Mayor’s Back To School Fair (scheduled for Aug. 5 at Fair Park). He will be joined by Dr. Michael Hinojosa, Fair sponsors, Dallas City Councilmembers and Dallas ISD Trustees.

With a crowd of 40,000 expected to attend the Aug. 5 Fair, families are encouraged to sign up early to ensure receipt of school supplies. Free school supplies are available only to families who meet specific eligibility requirements.

At the news conference, Cedric B’s Barber and Beauty Shop and Ogle School of Skin, Hair and Nails will provide free haircuts for kids. Children from Zaragoza Elementary’s violin and modern band groups will perform prior to the news conference. Birthday cake will be served.

Representing the Dallas Mavericks will be Champ, MavsMan, the Mavs ManiAACs and Mavs dancersAmerigroup’s mascot, Captain Amerigroup, Halfprice Books mascot Bookworm and the State Fair mascot Little Big Tex will also be on hand.

WHO:                   Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings will be joined by Dallas ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael HinojosaCarlotta Hooks, principal, Zaragoza Elementary; Rick Rodman, senior vice president of commercial banking, Capital One Bank; Dr. Andy Stoker, senior minister, First United Methodist Church; and a representative from Walmart. Two long-time Fair volunteers will be recognized. Several Dallas City Councilmembers and Dallas ISD Board of Trustees will attend.

WHY:                    Many parents agree that costs can quickly add up when preparing children for the first day of school. That’s why so many community supporters continue to come together every year to help students and families with their school-related needs at the Mayor’s Back To School Fair. From free school supplies for Dallas schoolchildren (who meet specific eligibility requirements), to free health, dental and vision screenings, immunizations and haircuts, to the latest information on education, health and social services, the 20th-annual Fair offers parents and children everything they need for the first day of school. Plus, the Fair will feature musical entertainment, kids activities, games, interactive demos and more.

WHAT:                 Focusing on helping students with many of their school-related needs, the Mayor’s Back To School Fair is a collaborative effort between the City of Dallas, Dallas ISD, Dallas area schools, the public health department, state agencies, non-profits, corporations and volunteers. The event is free and open to the public.

WHEN:                 Thursday (June 23) at 10:30 a.m.
