Dallas Commissioner John Wiley Price, D-District 3, continued to carry the message of goodwill toward thousands of displaced immigrants in McAllen, Texas as he addressed the members of Friendship West Baptist Church on Sunday.

As many as 2,000 children could be moved from the Rio Grande military holding facilities to more sanitary and safe temporary shelters in Dallas County. The announcement from Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins along with other Democratic leadership has met very vocal opposition.

“I’ve never understood how the oppressed take on the ways of the oppressor,” said Price. “We’ve got to be better than that. If anybody ought to know…we ought to know.”

Jenkins echoes the sentiments of Commissioner Price who described the incident as an opportunity for Dallas County to lend a humanitarian hand to those “trapped and scared children in not good conditions on the border.” While their entry from Central America through Mexico across US borders are illegal their motives to escape a life of violence, drug and sexual abuse cannot be prosecuted.

“All we have done is say that we are going to be a processing station to help people on their way. This isn’t about housing people,
this is about protecting these kids and doing what we need to do,” said Price as he paraphrased a quote from the late Dr. Maya Angelou. “What we lack in this country is courage. We know what needs to be done. We just lack the courage to do it.”
