rachel holloway wellsWELLS, Rachel Holloway Rachel Holloway Wells passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 20, 2015 at age 90. She is survived by her two daughters, Brenda Wilson and Adrian Hickman; her two grandchildren, Jeffery Hickman and his wife, Kristi Hickman; Melanie Wilson; her 3 great-grandchildren, Hannah Hickman, Ella Grace Hickman and Justin Wilson; her special 97 year old cousin, Venicia Holloway-Williams, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Wells. The viewing is Monday January 26 from 3-7pm and wake from 7-7:45pm at Evergreen Funeral Home (6449 University Hills Blvd. Dallas). The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday January 27 at 11am at Good Street Baptist Church (3110 Bonnie View Rd. Dallas). Rachel was born Sept. 3, 1924 in Dallas to Joe & Viola Holloway. After graduating from Booker T. Washington Technical High School in 1940, she attended Prairie View State College and Bishop College. After graduating with her BA, she was hired by the US Navy and underwent training at SMU where she became the first African-American woman to fill a Junior Typist position. A year later, she moved back to Dallas and began her career in Education that spanned nearly 40 years and 5 different schools. In 1976, she co-founded the Washington/Lincoln Alumni Association of Dallas. The first meeting was in her home and it is still thriving today. She was inducted into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Zeta Chapter and was recently recognized for 50 years of Service to the Sisterhood. Rachel was also inducted into the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Epsilon Chapter where she held many offices. After her retirement she also served on the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Dallas Landmark Commission. She was a member of Good Street Baptist Church for many years; while later in life she experienced a spiritual renewal and faithfully worshipped at the DFW Church of Christ. Rachel lived a full life and contributed to so many organizations in a myriad of ways. However, she will be remembered most by the love and devotion she showered on her family. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
