“Now we demand a chance to do things for ourself. We are tired of beatin’ our head against the wall and working’ for someone else.  We are people, we are just like the birds and the bees –We’d rather die on our feet than be livin’ on our knees.  Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud”.  James Brown, 1968

The Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce is back!  Hallelujah!!  Back with a new spirit.  A new rhythm and a new sound.  At the concert on Friday Night, September 7, 2018, Toyota Music Factory, there was dancing in the street, in the aisles and in the seats.  And I was especially proud that local talent was on the stage. Hosted by Lynne Haze and Vivica Fox, these ladies kept the traffic moving. And it was LaWonda Peoples that caused the traffic ‘”jam” in the first place.   The soundtrack of the evening was back to the so called “Blaxploitation”.  That’s a back-in-the-day true free expression.  Will Downing and Calvin Richardson as sensational!! as ever.  They came with it between classical melodies and African styles, playing between the blues impulse and the rock spectacle to songs we knew the lyrics to.  And who was that guitar player?  Top showmanship to an awaiting audience on a hot, rainy Friday Night.  It just does not get any better than being black on a Friday Night.

The star of the evening was a stupendous sultry soul and jazz singer with a stimulating figure.  Maysa pulled the spirit and the emotion all together… putting a cap on the entire concert moments that will bring us all back the next year and the next. Maysa was most gracious at the VIP reception accepting a Texas Senate Proclamation from Royce West, State Senator, and being available for pictures.  It is important to say that proceeds from the concert and further events are part of the Dallas Black Chamber’s scholarship program and the new building capitol campaign to be erected on Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd in sunny south Dallas.  The Dallas Black Chamber is one of the oldest chambers in the nation.

To Darren James, Chamber Chairman of the Board, members and entire staff, this was a triumphant black and proud stance.  The community is looking forward to supporting you, joining you and dancin’ to your continued success.
