A Little Bit of Faith: Give Thanks

One of my favorite times of the year is Thanksgiving.  It’s a time when we as a country pause to give thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon this country and our individual families.  Giving thanks is a sacred thing.  However, when the Bible speaks of giving thanks, it’s telling His people to give thanks because the Lord is good.

In Psalm 106: 1 it says, “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! His mercy endures forever.”  God’s mercy and grace has been shown in our lives in so many ways. This country has been blessed in many ways as well.  Perhaps that’s why when this country was founded – even though there were many struggles – this country has endured.  People are willing to acknowledge that our Lord is GOOD.

Our Lord is still Good! His mercy still endures.  Without mercy how can we go on? We are unable to move forward unless we are able to acknowledge that His mercy will and does endure forever.  Forever is a long, long, long time.  That’s a good thing.  We as a people, and a country, need that kind of mercy to continue.

During this time of Thanksgiving, remember to pause and reflect upon the blessings that you have received during this year.  Be willing to give thanks to the Lord for those blessings.  Be willing to acknowledge that God is good.  Since God is good, be willing to acknowledge how He has moved in and intervened on your behalf.

If you are unable to think of reasons to give thanks, if you’re still employed, be thankful.  If you’re not employed, but you are still able to feed and shelter your family, give thanks. If you were told that you did not have much time left, but somehow you are still here, give thanks. If you’ve been praying for your children and you are now beginning to see some change in their lives, give thanks.

Take time today to sit down and write a list of the things you can be thankful to God for.  And during this joyful season of Thanksgiving, take a day each week to lift up your hands and words in praise of the One who has provided for you.  Won’t you please remember to give thanks today? Amen.
